In looking back at the last three or four months, they were an incredibly productive time for this little blog o’mine. I wrote lengthy, time-intensive pieces…two original radio theater scripts…a handful of vintage TV articles, a book review, a DVD review…busy, busy, busy! (Billy DeWolfe, we salute you.)
But summer! Summer is the time for doing things! So far my #summerofdoingthings has included the triumphant return of the Thunder on the Prairie Rod Run; a hosting gig with Herr Kroheim von Showheim at the Sandhills Drive-In foster care benefit concert; recording a new internet radio show with my pals Jeremy, Dave and Kalin; and shooting my scene in an independent short film being produced by my creative pal Dangerous Dave Kuskie. Dave has previously directed me on film in this little gem:
And there’s great stuff on the horizon!
-Today our clients and friends Greg and Lisa Carter came in to record a new batch of commercials for Carter’s Home Hardware and Appliance. We have a lot of fun recording these commercials, which are never scripted. Greg and Lisa improvise a conversation. Sometimes I pitch a line or idea. Then comes the editing…typically each 30-second commercial starts at 5 minutes or more of conversation. The goal is to keep that loose, conversational sound while cutting things down to the most essential elements. It’s a challenge, but a fun one. Greg and Lisa also recorded a podcast interview for our Summer Of Small Business series. I’m excited for folks to hear the commercials and podcast.
-Later this week, that marvelous old community theater group the Main Street Players will be meeting to discuss a new production! Our last show was in late 2019 and was a comedic survival guide to the zombie apocalypse. That almost seems quaint compared to what 2020 really had in store. Getting the old gang back together will be one more big piece locking into the jigsaw puzzle called “normal”.
-This Saturday Alliance’s Central Park will be the center of attention for the ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony for the new pillars and sunken gardens. This is the final payoff of a herculean effort that involved fundraising, working with city government and raising awareness in the community. I am honored to be serving as master of ceremonies for the dedication ceremony and looking forward to being a part of this historic occasion.
-Heritage Days is back to full throttle this year, carnival and all, and with that comes our busy and fun week of live broadcasting. Kalin and I will be hosting live coverage on KCOW during Heritage Days week and providing float-by-float coverage of the Heritage Days parade.
-And in late July……………I’m goin’ hoooooooome…hoooooome….
Yes, I know it’s a Christmas song. But this trip is a makegood (radio term) for the Christmas trip I did not take last December due to COVID. My hometown of South Otselic, NY holds sweet, happy memories for me…I am really looking forward to seeing my family…including the entire Wentworth clan at the annual family reunion. This will be the first Wentworthapalooza I have made in 22 years, because Heritage Days (an “all hands on deck” event for the radio station) has been scheduled the same weekend as the reunion every single year…until now).
Let the #summerofdoingthings continue unabated!
